We all have more values attitudes and beliefs than we realise. They act as automatic filters affecting the way we see the world and the way we react and behave and can have a nasty habit of becoming stubborn, self-fulfilling prophecies. However, since we have learned all our values they are malleable and we can choose to modify any that have passed their sell-by date.

The manual shows how we can surface, scrutinise, select and share our values, attitudes and beliefs. The short checklists contained in this valuable resource will help increase self-awareness enabling people to surface their core personal values, and help them to be clearer about what is important to them. It can be used to raise a dialogue in order to better understand other people’s opinions and outlooks, as well as in new relationships, such as inductions, appraisals, project team launches and mentoring. It also contains commentaries to make it easy for people to ‘benchmark’ themselves.

What is the purpose of this manual?

It is designed to help people surface, scrutinise and, if necessary, update their values, attitudes and beliefs (VABs).  This is an important process because, even though everyone has VABs that directly influence their behaviour, they are usually vague and fuzzy and often have passed their sell-by date.

Is it for me?  What is the target population for this manual?

The manual is written for two target populations.  Firstly, for trainers who want to run sessions using the checklists (there are 12 of them). A special Trainer’s Introduction gives advice on how to do this in a 30-minute and a 60-minute session.  Secondly, the manual doubles-up as a self-development resource that anyone could use - working alone or with colleagues - without professional help.

Who wrote the manual?

Dr Peter Honey who is a Chartered Psychologist dedicated to helping people develop themselves and improve their performance.  He has used all the checklists in this manual himself on many occasions and for different clients.  He knows from first-hand experience, that the 12 short checklists published in this manual are a highly effective way to surface people’s values, attitudes and beliefs and ‘hold them up to the light’. Peter Honey is a well-known advocate of self-assessment questionnaires that explore soft-skills.

What difference will it make?

It will help people become better at:

  • Identifying and describing, in spoken or written words, their core values
  • Challenging and updating values, attitudes and beliefs that have passed their sell-by-date
  • Avoiding the perils of allowing outmoded values to continue to ‘contaminate’ their behaviour
  • Being up-front about their core values so that other people don’t have to waste time trying to work out ‘where they are coming from’
  • Getting on the right wavelength and quickly establishing productive, open relationships with people.

In how many ways could I use the manual?

You could:

  • Simply work through the checklists by yourself and benchmark yourself against the author’s values, attitudes and beliefs
  • Work through the checklists in consultation with a colleague or friend and compare and contrast the results
  • Choose which checklists are of particular interest/relevance, and build them into a training session
  • Use a checklist of your choice as a non-threatening, participative, warm-up exercise
  • Use the checklists as published, but customise the score-keys to reflect the espoused values of your organisation
  • Use the checklists as published, but produce your own rationale and commentaries (using the ones in the manual as examples only)
  • Photocopy whichever parts you want to use as handouts
  • Use the materials when inducting new staff, or as an appraisal or coaching tool.

So, why should I buy it?

To use the tried-and-tested materials as a splendid way to get people thinking hard about such things as Leading and Managing, Influencing, Motivation, Creating a Learning Organisation – and eight other topics critically important to the success of any organisation.
